[fruit] The word ripeness has been running across my mind lately. No doubt it has to do with the coming of my favorite eating season – SUMMER- full of rich, ripe, delicious home grown fruits and vegetables. Isn’t this just the best time to eat? Soon you’ll find stands popping up all over town. If you can’t find one, there’s always local farm markets open on weekends!

For years now web experts have been utilizing page views as the holy grail of web content metrics. If you find yourself still glued to your page view numbers, to the detriment of other traffic indicators, then my guess is you’re stuck in a page view rut, and your traffic isn’t growing as fast as [...]

But for me, the most intriguing aspect of your online business isn’t about the technology. It’s about human connections, and how you can create these in a virtual environment.

Just as spring brings heavy rains to clean and refresh the fields and streams, we should make a practice of cleansing and refreshing our system…inside and out. Plant a garden, in the ground or in a container. Lettuces, all manner of veggies and greens can be grown in small spaces. These are the things that [...]

Just like death and taxes, getting spam in your e-mail inbox is a simple, unavoidable fact of life. If you have an inbox – and some of us have several – you’re going to get spam. As a computer ‘geek’ and teacher, I have to be honest with you – there’s nothing you can do to absolutely, positively prevent spam from reaching your inbox one hundred percent of the time. The important question then becomes: If you can’t avoid spam, what can you do to keep the inflow to a minimum, and what do you do with the stuff that does get through?

Let’s face it; women in the workplace, particularly when starting or growing a company are presented with unique challenges – and even advantages over our male colleagues. The media is fraught with the message that as women we are the down trodden, ever suffering, and beleaguered. Today I would like to take exception with the “noise” and focus on the positive aspects of women starting or growing a business. I could write an epistle on the challenges and difficulties of juggling family, financial difficulties, discrimination and the like but I just can’t get my head wrapped around all the negative messages we receive.

A few years ago my husband and I made a huge decision. We decided to “live debt free”, pay cash for everything and be more focused on our environment. We donated most of the things we didn’t need to our favorite charities, set the thermostats way below the average and canceled the memberships we really didn’t use that often, including Blockbuster. We sold our new vehicles, opted to car share and buy used, American made vehicles (well, as much as can be – that’s another blog). We bought slightly used Fords, for cash, wanting to keep it as much a Michigan product as possible. NO MORE MONTHLY CAR PAYMENTS. Bonus – our insurance rates have dropped drastically.

We have seen so many changes in our economy this past year. Not much of it good. People all over the world are losing their homes and having to file bankruptcy. Credit card companies are steadily raising their rates. Who can afford this? No one can. It is that simple. It hasn’t left many of us with a lot of choices. But, we do have choices that can help us instead of beat us down.
